This release features GNOME 2.22 and KDE4, a 2.6.25-rc5 based Linux kernel, the Firefox 3 Beta 5 browser, Java in the OpenJDK6 implementation with free replacements coming from IcedTea, and X.org 1.4 with a pre-release of X Server 1.5. The Anaconda installer was improved, along with enhancements for seamless updates. Dictionary support was consolidated among OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Thunderbird, GNOME, and KDE. Several Bluetooth and NetworkManager enhancements were made. PackageKit was introduced as a software management method. FreeIPA was added, allowing you to easily manage security information.
This release features Gnome 2.20, KDE 3.5.8 (and KDE 4 Beta from the repositories), and Xfce 4.4.1. NetworkManager was enhanced. PulseAudio is now the default sound server. The Compiz is installed (but not enabled by default), and Compiz Fusion is also available. CodecBuddy is now included, allowing users to install support for proprietary multimedia content under patent limitations. IcedTea is now the default Java environment on x86 and x86_64. Many improvements were made, such as improved power management, enhanced Bluetooth and laptop support, increased yum and pirut performance, and more.
The new Infinity look and feel and the Nokoda
GNOME theme have been
developed. A new graphical firewall configuration
tool has been
introduced. Bluetooth support has been improved.
PulseAudio is included
and enabled by default. rsyslog has been made the
new syslog daemon. Big
Board (an optional GNOME panel replacement) and
Codec Buddy (a helper
application for restricted multimedia codecs) have
been integrated. The
x86_64 kernel now also supports tickless
operation. The need for xfs has
been eliminated, to reduce boot time and power
consumption.
