This topic is about software that can be used to edit images as well as the methods involved in said software. I would like to start this discussion with a mention of the free paint.NET tool. Compared to the rustical-and-old GIMP, the paint.NET image editor is a free Windows-based application that I use for my daily image editing purposes. I whole-heartedly recommend it to you because it has decent features.
Today I have reminded the paint.NET community that its image editor is still lacking alpha-blend modes. Seven years ago another member did suggest the feature but he was instead redirected to use some weird plugins. In my opinion it is an unnecessary complication. Alpha masks for everyone!
