Better Cyrillic encoding tables, selection of the base TTF encodings for use with external maps, improved hinting, fixes for bugs in the metrics printout and font code (over)optimisation, and other small features and fixes.
This release fixes 2 bugs from 3.3.* that caused rare crashes, removes from the output file the comments that crashed dvips, adds man pages, install/uninstall scripts, explicit selection of multibyte fonts PID/EID/plane, and support for external t1asm, and improves the glyph banner script. ttf2pfa is obsolete and no longer included.
The invisible changes in 3.3.0 came to fruition in 3.3.1: it got the second font parser, based on the FreeType library, that can read more types of files. A couple of rare crashes have been fixed too, the Windows port is buildable again, and the RPM spec file has been updated.
This release includes euro sign support, improved makefiles for Windows, support for multi-level composite glyphs, vastly improved processing of the outlines which is done mostly in floating point now, and one important but yet mostly invisible change, a modular interface for font parsers.
